Mrs. Dalloway

Theme:

Companionship vs. Lonliness was a theme throughout this book. The characters were constantly surrounded by crowds and people but were in reality isolated and lonely. As members of high society, the characters search for a sense of connection but are constantly forced to put on a facade to impress those around them. This prevents them from having the meaningful relationships they long for. Because they are constantly surrounded and concerned with their reputations, they are unable to truly express themselves.

Irony:

Irony is prevalent in this story through the fact that the characters are physically close to so many people they cannot form deeper relationships. It is ironic because they are around so many people that they can't understand themselves or really know the people around them. This situation makes for a life of lonliness. This is a contrast to the general thinking that the only lonely people are those who do not have constant contact with others. However, the characters in the novel show that although that are always around their aquaintences, they are lonely and unhappy with their personal lives.

Quote:

"As a cloud crosses the sun, silence falls on London; and falls on the mind. Effort ceases. Time flaps on the mast. There we stop; there we stand. Rigid, the skeloton of habit alone upholds the human frame." pg 49

This quote illutrates the theme of lonliness and isolation. At the end of the day, although residing in London and possessing sufficient wealth, the characters are all alone. They are unhappy as they go through the motions of life without feeling. "The skeloton of habit" being the only thing they know, they are empty and unfullfilled.

The analysis is not passage based. You need to engage in a close reading of the passage to make your case. Develop the skeleton image and show how it dramatizes the theme. Take a look at the required elements on the assignment page. You have an opportunity to revise.
