Hamlet Seminar

"Something is rotten in the state of Denmark," says Marcellus. What is?

Defend, refute, or qualify: "This play is as much about Gertrude as it is about Hamlet."

This play has been interpreted as a treatise on friendship. What do you make of Hamlet's friends, namely Horatio, Rosencrantz, Guildenstern, and Ophelia?

Hamlet's plan to "catch the conscience of the king" by staging a play is a dumb idea. Then again, it's so crazy it just might work! How does his plan "work" as a metaphor?

What makes Ophelia mad? Diagnose her with evidence from the play.

Would Hamlet make a good king? Why?

I do not think Hamlet would make a good king.  Kings must be leaders who are willing to do what is necessary for the good of their country.  Kings must be able to make quick decisions and must have the confidence of the people.  Hamlet does not have any of these qualities.  He thinks too much about what to do, rather than just doing it.  Also, many of the citizens believe that Hamlet is crazy.  It would not go over well with them if a crazy guy became king.
