Essay #1: Narrative Essay "Difficult Test, Strength of Character"

  • a NARRATIVE essay tells a story and explains how that story makes a point about life and human nature 
  • Save this essay and use it on your college applications. 
  • You may have to write a narrative on the PSSA in writing.  

 

In The Crucible, John Proctor and other characters face difficult challenges and tests of character.  They also struggle with themselves. They experience INTERNAL CONFLICT when they are faced with a choice of giving in to pressure or staying true to themselves. 

 

Tell a story about a time when you were faced with a test of your character, then compare you experience with events or characters from The Crucible.

 

Describe a time when you faced a difficult challenge that tested your character. 

 

  • Tell a story. Tell the reader how the situation arose, how you dealt with it, and how it worked out.
  • Emphasize your INTERNAL CONFLICT. Tell the reader how you struggled with the situation. 
  • Compare your experience with a character in The Crucible.

 

Length: 25 typed lines, about a page double spaced in 12-point font

 

Scoring:

  • 3 paragraphs:
    • Tell the story.
    • Emphasize your internal conflict.
    • Compare your experience with a character in The Crucible.  60 points
  • Write your essay in Google Docs, double spaced in 12 point font. 20 points
  • Your essay contains a mix of long and short sentences. 20 points
