  • Sign up above to be “on the bubble.”

  • On your appointed day, come in with a question or problem for the class to discuss.

    • The question has to be text-rooted, but not plot-based.
    • It should be based on what we are reading or have read.
    • It should stimulate discussion, debate, and interpretation.

Examples

  • Ambiguous, suggestive, and /or problematic imagery, metaphors, or diction.

    • “I’m not sure how this simile works...”
    • Is the author/speaker suggesting ____ when he writes _____?
    • “The image of the ___ is bothering me and I want to know what people think.”

  • Character analysis

    • “I’d like to discuss why ___ did ___. What was his motivation?”
    • “_____ contradicts himself when he ___.”

  • Irony and Tone

    • “I was not expecting _____.”
    • “I’d like to ask what people thought of the tone of this passage...”
    • ‘Was anyone else surprised when...”
    • Is the speaker being critical of the character when he says...

  • Socio-political readings

    • “Why are the men/women in this text portrayed as _____?”
    • “I think the speaker wants to make a political point when he says....”

Keep it simple. Start with:

  • I noticed....
  • I was surprised by...
  • I thought it was strange that...
  • I’m wondering why the author wrote / speaker said...
